2010 is a BC Summer Games year (Langley, B.C.)  An important opportunity for 14 and 15 year
old athletes.

Junior Development News:

Our JD season for 9-12 year olds will start on Wednesday, April 7 at 6 p.m.  Our practice nights will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-7:30 p.m. Once the weather warms up and there is more daylight we may consider extending the practice duration.   There is still time to register.  Contact our registrar, Karen Hatch and she will help you complete the required forms.  For new registrants please make sure that you bring your athlete's birth certificate and medical card.  Also, please bring payment as no one is allowed on the track unless their registration is complete (insurance reasons).

The Junior Development Program is a multilateral program which develops fundamental movement skills and coordination, and lays the foundation for a future in any sport.  Athletes will be taught the basics of track and field, including all the running and throwing events allowed for this age group.  This fun appproach will allow our athletes the opportunity to compete in local and out of town meets in BC.
There are no attendance rules for practices or track meets but it is obvious that the more exposure they receive the more knowledgeable and skilled they will become.

For the first few weeks we will be working on conditioning.  As it warms up we will be getting out all of the equipment and having the chance to learn the skills required to compete and have fun.

Coaches for JD Groups:
                                         Pavla Lounova
                                         Rick Gandha
                                         Peter Maryschuk, JD Coordinator
                                         Kristy McElroy
                                         Mark Percival

We are in need of a few more reliable coaches.  No experience is necessary.  Just lots of enthusiasm and a willingness to work with kids.  We will train you and provide you with all of the support you need to become part of our team.  Contact P. Maryschuk, JD Coordinator if you would like more info.

Parents--if you are willing to help out at practices (equipment, etc) we can certainly use you.  Many hands make the work light (especially those high jump mats).  If you contribute on a regular basis we can credit your volunteer hours account too.

Volunteering:
There are many volunteer opportunities within the Kelowna Track and Field Club  From leadership and organizational support to coaching, helping at practices and meets, to attaining sponsorships, there are many ways.  We know life is busy and everyone has crazy schedules, but even a few hours a month can make all the difference in the lives of our young and aspiring athletes.

Our club supports the BC Athletics Officials Program, and many of our members volunteer and work with them at events.  Currently, Kelowna Track and Field has close to a dozen people certified to officiate in some capacity.

BC Athletics officials are trained volunteers that work at Track and Field, Cross Country and Road Race events.  These are the people who ensure the fairness/measurements/fun and organization of the track meets we all attend throughout the season.  Many are parents, but some are athletes or coaches, active and retired.  Young athletes can join the Under-18 years old officials program to enhance their understanding of the sport and to accumulate credits for school programs.  We encourage our members to get involved.  Visit the BC Athletics webpage at www.bcathletics.org/main/officials  for the latest information on training and certfication as an official.  Or, stop by the Apple Bowl and talk to one of our head coaches.
